Robbie Savage sets Rangers penalty trap for Chris Sutton before unwavering Celtic hero takes fresh VAR tact

Robbie Savage has declared that John Beaton was correct to award Rangers a penalty during their clash with Celtic - but Chris Sutton refused to budge on his view that it was the wrong call.

James Tavernier was given the chance to pull a goal back for the Light Blues with Brendan Rodgers' men holding a 2-0 lead when VAR stepped in following a tumble in the box from Fabio Silva. Referee Beaton was sent to the monitor to review a challenge made by Alistair Johnston in the box - and after seeing the replays the man in the middle pointed to the spot.

It offered the home side a route back into the game in the 3-3 Old Firm classic - but the amount of contact made by the Canadian international on the Wolves loanee has sparked debate among the pundits. However, Savage was firm in his view that whistler Beaton got the decision right as he gushed about the game on BBC 606's as he attempted to noise up fellow host Sutton.

Savage said: "It was a great game and a fantastic watch for the neutral. It was a penalty, wasn't it? On Silva? It was the right call, definitely a penalty."

The Celtic hero was quick to respond: 'You are just trying to noise me up now." An undeterred Savage went on: "It's a penalty, Chris. There was contact, it was knee high."

While many have questioned the level of contact, Sutton took a different tact as he quizzed on if VAR should have got involved at all. He said: "There has to be sufficient contact, Rob. He went down all afternoon. There were many incidents before that and he goes down again.

"He is awarded a yellow card for simulation. Was it a clear and obvious error? Was there sufficient contact, Rob? Come on. You are just saying that."
