Chris Sutton defends Joe Hart Celtic penalty call as he makes Man City comparison
Chris Sutton has defended Joe Hart taking Celtic's fifth penalty against Aberdeen, pointing out that Ederson doing similar for Man City didn't get the same attention.
The Brazilian scored in the Citizen's Champions League shoot-out defeat to Real Madrid, whereas Hart saw his spot-kick hit the post in the Scottish Cup semi-final, when scoring would have sent the Hoops through to the final. He made amends by saving Killian Phillips' effort in sudden death to set up a final date with Rangers, but why the keeper was sent up ahead of other outfield players - who went on to score themselves - has drawn questions.
Sutton's It's All Kicking Off podcast co-host Ian Ladyman was left baffled at Hart being included in the original five takers. But Sutton was quick to draw parallels with Ederson. "Are you just having a pop at Scottish football here?" He asked: "What about Ederson for Manchester City? Did he not take one for Manchester City against Real Madrid? You didn't mention Ederson popping one in, but as soon as it happens in Scotland, we'll have a dig.
"No, your point does stand. By all accounts, and I didn't know this, but Joe Hart apparently scored a penalty for England U21s. In fairness, Celtic's penalty record this season has been pretty woeful. They've been through numerous players.
"It was all made for Joe to score, then he hit the post. But he did save one in the end from Killian Phillips."
Ladyman then suggested that Hart didn't look all that bothered after he hit the woodwork, and Sutton replied: "I think he was just trying to style it out! keep his head. Like it was meant to be!"
