River Island store in Greater Manchester closed after 'severe flooding'

The River Island store in Stockport was forced to close for a number of days after being badly flooded. Shoppers found that the branch in the Merseyway Shopping Centre in the town centre had suddenly closed its doors last week.

A sign in the window read: "We have had to close the shop. Sorry for the inconvenience that its caused. Denton & Oldham are the next closest stores. We are unsure at this point when we will reopen. We are unsure at this point when we will reopen."

The Manchester Evening News was told the store had suffered 'severe' flooding during last week's heavy rainfall.

A Met Offfce amber weather warning for rain was in place on Wednesday and Thursday last week due to the 'heavy and persistent' downpours which warned of likely damage and disruption.

Since then the region has been hit by further wet weather including thunderstorms on Sunday and further rain yesterday (Monday). Today (Tuesday) have issued a yellow thunderstorm warning ahead of more 'torrential downpours.'

Contractors were called into the store. River Island declined to comment but a post on Stockport Tourism's Facebook page said the store re-opened today (Tuesday).
