Rio Ferdinand brutally slams Manchester United's 'shambles' defence vs Liverpool

Rio Ferdinand has branded Manchester United's performance against Liverpool as a 'shambles'.

Liverpool beat United 4-0 on Tuesday night with goals from Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane and two from Mohamed Salah. United failed to match Liverpool across all areas of the pitch and they managed just one shot on goal throughout the full 90 minutes.

This season simply cannot end soon enough for United. There have been multiple nightmare performances this term and the heavy defeat to Liverpool at Anfield was just the latest unforgivable display, which was all too predictable.

Ferdinand assessed the performance on Wednesday and he couldn't believe the standard of defending from United. "The whole team was a shambles," Ferdinand told FIVE.

"Defensively, every goal you can pick out and go 'what was he doing'. Every single one of those players, you think oh my god where are you. No awareness, no awareness of runners or players.

"The two full-backs, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka and [Diogo] Dalot, not following their men and [Harry] Maguire in no man's land. Not tight to the striker, not covering the run and in the middle of nowhere. People will say you shouldn't pick out.

"You can't hide from the fact that it was an embarrassment yesterday."
