Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes agree over Manchester United midfield transfer

Manchester United greats Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes agree that Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong would be the perfect midfield signing for Erik ten Hag during the summer window. United have been weighing-up a move for De Jong and Barcelona appear open to selling amid FFP concerns.

With a much-needed rebuild on the horizon, United will target at least one central midfield recruit with departures for Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba - among others - underlining the need for further signings in that area. Of course, De Jong is well known to Ten Hag following their time together at Ajax.

Barcelona admit De Jong might have to be sold this summer and United are monitoring his services. If successful, it would cost them around £75million but - according to Ferdinand and Scholes - that signature would be worth every single penny as United seek to address a problem area.

Speaking on his popular FIVE podcast, Ferdinand said: "I've always thought that he was a top player. I watched him closely in the Champions League semi-final year [2019] and I got to see a lot of him as part of the BT Sport team.

"They're saying Frenkie de Jong could be the first signing to come in under Erik ten Hag and I would be saying; 'Yes, great signing'. He's not huge in terms of frame, but he's quick with the ball, really good dribbler, can get out of tight situations, makes good decisions, good passer, his balance and dribbling ability are really good.

"[Manchester United] are a team who are looking for players who can control the ball and control the game and get the team functioning in terms of balance and possession, I think he would be a good addition.
