Report: Tottenham set sights on new target in perfect £45m-rated star Conte has always loved
Tottenham Hotspur have now set their sights on a new transfer target in Atletico Madrid star Jose Gimenez, according to reports.
Despite the brilliant form of defenders Cristian Romero and Eric Dier in parts, Conte still has his sights on upgrading his back three with a world class new centre-half.
The Telegraph report that the addition of a central defender is one of six signings Tottenham’s head coach wants this summer with the likes of Stefan de Vrij repeatedly linked recently.
The Athletic also claim that a left-sided centre-back is a top summer priority for Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici as they draw up a pre-summer shortlist.
Now, according to Spanish sources, it appears a new name is on Conte’s agenda.
It is believed that Tottenham are now one of the clubs have their ‘sights’ set on Atletico star Gimenez amid his ‘impressive’ La Liga season.
The South American colossus is thinking of moving away from Diego Simeone’s side and Spurs are apparently interested.
Conte has ‘always liked’ Gimenez with the report claiming he can fit ‘perfectly’ with Romero in Tottenham’s backline.
The £45 million-rated star emerging as a target for Tottenham arguably makes sense given his form and rumours Gimenez wishes to depart Atletico this summer.
A composed and assured figure at the back, Gimenez averaged a higher pass accuracy (88%) than any of his teammates in the Spanish top flight before today’s La Liga action (WhoScored).
He also made more clearances per 90 than all of Simeone’s stars, leaving little wonder Conte is a major fan and wants him in the Premier League.
