Report reveals F1 has set sights on return to Africa in near future

A recent report from The Race has revealed that Formula 1 is planning on getting an African race back on the calendar as its next target, with Kyalami in South Africa the leading candidate.

F1 has seen its calendar grow rather substantially in recent years with the sport eager to capitalise on new markets and new geographical areas of interest that want a piece of the F1 pie.

Indeed, that is most reflected by the 2023 calendar looking set to have three Grands Prix in the US – the most any country will have – with the Netflix series Drive to Survive playing its part in bringing in a US audience.

Now, though, F1 is looking elsewhere to add further locations to the calendar and, given it is a world championship we’re speaking of, it would make sense to have at least one Grand Prix on the African continent.

That said, then, Kyalami – according to The Race – is the likely candidate with F1 last racing there in the early 90s.

As per the report, it will need to be revamped to meet FIA Grade 1 status and so we won’t see it on the calendar until at least 2024, but it does seem as though there is a willingness to get this Grand Prix back.

The track, in more recent years, has held events like A1 GP and the GP Masters but F1 has not returned since 1993.

That near 30-year wait, though, may be about to come to an end…
