Remarkable stories told as Perth Strathtay Harriers host special celebration to mark 75 year anniversary

Perth Strathtay Harriers held a special celebration to mark its 75 year anniversary.

The informal drop-in event at Cafe 80 in the Fair City was a chance for Harriers past and present to come together, share stories and remember their time with the community-based athletics club.

The club, over the last few months, had reached out to the thousands of people who were - or continue to be - members.

That led to an afternoon and evening of reminiscing about their memorable days on the track and field.

For those who were not able to attend in person, there was an opportunity to get in contact, to say hello and network with old team-mates.

Perth Strathtay Harriers’ club president Jim Hunter said: “Some remarkable stories emerged about the club and its achievements over the years on and off the track.

“These included Olympic and Commonwealth Games representation and numerous national titles alongside many official roles in Scottish athletics.

“It all started way back in 1948 with a group of young men led by local PE teacher, Neil Campbell, going for a run from the Swimming Baths in the Dunkeld Road.

“Continuing through the decades with guidance from wonderful coaches including Bob Gillies, Harry McLeish, Stuart Leitch, David Gilfillan and Margaret Duncan to name but a few, the club legacy in Perth runs deep.”

Jim went on to add: “A highlight of our event on Friday was welcoming Ian Newton who was one of those original runners way back in 1948 and continued his association for many years after that only being interrupted by his time in National Service.”

With so many Harriers in attendance, it was a fitting time to award Ian Leitch with the title of Honorary Life President in recognition of his decades of selfless work to promote
