Reece James' Chelsea performance has exposed another Manchester United issue

Manchester United have always been famous for how their teams under Sir Alex Ferguson played down the wing. Their wingers have been dynamic and impactful and their fullbacks have also been a force going forward as well as being secure defensively.

However, if you watched United's game against Chelsea on Thursday you couldn't have seen a starker difference between what the club used to be on the wing compared to what they are now. Under both Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer there have been serious problems in both attack and defence when it comes to the ball being out wide.

Against Chelsea, Marcus Rashford started on the left-wing and Alex Telles started at left-back and neither could deal with Reece James, who was holding the width alone at right wing-back. Rangnick changed to three-at-the-back when he brought on Phil Jones but this didn't make a difference.

United on paper have a strong left side, especially based on last season. Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford on their day are all excellent players but it hasn't gone to plan this year.

Shaw hasn't been in his best form this season and had consistent problems with injury throughout the season. Rashford's form has not been anywhere near the levels he reached last season and Pogba has also had a long injury lay off but he is going to leave Old Trafford this summer on a free transfer.

Jadon Sancho has also been effective when played on the left this season, but he also missed the game against Chelsea due to illness. And Rangnick suggested in his press conference that the player may miss the rest of the season recovering.
