'Reckless' driver reversed into police car then was caught by police dog

A 'reckless' driver reversed into a police car, narrowly missing a police officer.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how a police dog handler tried to stop a Honda being driven by Daniel Bourne at around 2.40am on Friday, December 6 last year. The car had been spotted speeding on Richmond Gardens in Newton-le-Willows near Wigan.

The 34-year-old failed to co-operate or get out of the car when he was stopped and the officer applied one handcuff. But Bourne then reversed into the officer's police vehicle, narrowly missing the officer.

Bourne then ran away before a police dog named Quga gave chase and detained him.

Bourne, of Devonshire Gardens, Newton-le-Willows, was arrested at the scene and was today jailed for 10-months. He was also banned from driving for 42 months.

Inspector Phil McManus said: "Thankfully the officer in this case only suffered cuts, bruising and soreness but the reckless actions of Bourne behind the wheel of his car could have had more serious consequences. Thankfully the officer was able to deploy PD Quga who quickly detained Bourne so a prompt arrest could be made."
