Raphael Varane's future plans as Erik ten Hag explains message to Man United squad after Liverpool draw

Manchester United ended a disappointing week on a positive note on Sunday as they exceeded expectations against Liverpool.

Following the Reds' departure from the Champions League, fans were wondering if it would be a case of how many the hosts won by at Anfield. Fortunately for United, that's not how the game panned out.

While Jurgen Klopp's team controlled possession and had plenty of shots, they very rarely threatened the United goal as the visitors defended admirably. Rasmus Hojlund had the best chance for United in the second half but his strike was well saved by Alisson. Varane is hopeful United will trigger the one-year extension in his contract, having communicated the incorrect expiry date at the time of his signing.

Varane's contract expires in June 2024 and United have the option of an additional year. When Varane completed his £42million transfer from Real Madrid in August 2021, United erroneously stated he was contracted to the club until 2025 with the option of a one-year extension.

In July 2020, United mistakenly communicated Nemanja Matic had signed a new contract until 2023 when the Serb had actually agreed a two-year deal with a one-year option. Matic elected not to stay for a third year.
