Raphael Varane named Manchester United captain vs Lyon in first game since Harry Maguire decision

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has named Raphael Varane as captain for Wednesday's friendly against Lyon.

The Reds face their second test of pre-season as they take on the French side at Murrayfield after beating Leeds United last week in Oslo. Ten Hag has made a couple of changes to his starting line-up, with Matej Kovar replacing Tom Heaton in goal and Antony replacing youngster Omari Forson.

Varane has been handed the armband for the game as the dust continues to settle following the news Harry Maguire has been stripped of the captaincy. The Frenchman also wore the armband in the first half of last week's clash with Leeds.

Maguire confirmed he would no longer be captain of United on social media last weekend, adding that he was 'extremely disappointed' by the call. The 30-year-old could leave Old Trafford this summer.

There are returns to the bench for Fred and Donny van de Beek, while youngsters Kobbie Mainoo, Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez keep their places in the side along with summer signing Mason Mount. After signing a short-term deal this week, Jonny Evans is named as a substitute.
