Rangers: 'Tough to take' as major rebuild now expected at Ibrox

Rangers look set to rebuild their squad this summer even if they go on to win the Scottish Premiership in the coming weeks, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Gers entered this season hoping for back-to-back titles after going through the entire campaign unbeaten last term under Steven Gerrard, but they appear to be on course to finish behind Celtic.

Rangers started the season very strongly, winning 16 of their opening 20 league matches, and they topped the table at the turn of the year.

However, in 2022, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have been beaten twice by Celtic, while they have also been held to draws by the likes of Aberdeen, Ross County, Dundee United and Motherwell.

This has allowed Celtic to overhaul them and move to the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers are still involved in the Europa League, and they are currently halfway through their quarter-final clash with Braga.

After losing to Celtic last weekend, Jones does not expect Rangers to catch their bitter rivals. Even if they do, Jones thinks the club will still freshen up their playing staff in the off-season.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It looks like the title race is over. I think that it’s a long way back from here for Rangers, and irrelevant of what happens, I think that Rangers are starting to look towards a rebuild now to try and get back on a level footing, because it’s been a harsh season for them. I think that it’s been tough to take, probably.”

The team have a number of experienced players out of contract at the end of the season, including Connor Goldson, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield.
