Rangers ratings as Todd Cantwell shows why he should be permanent fixture

Todd Cantwell was instrumental as Rangers saw off a Servette side to win 2-1 at Ibrox.

James Tavernier opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Cantwell was fouled inside the box before Cyriel Dessers netted a second, his first in Rangers colours shortly after. It was Dessers who was the victim at the other end as VAR adjudged him to have handled the ball inside the box. Up stepped Bedia who reduced arrears just as half time loomed.

Michael Beale’s men would dominate most of the tie without managing to make it count with David Douline dismissed with half an hour to play for a second yellow card and foul on Cantwell. It’s a slender lead but enough to send Rangers home confident they can get the job done and set up a mouthwatering potential play-off rematch – likely against PSV Eindhoven – in a few weeks' time.

Here is how Record Sport rated the Rangers players.

JACK BUTLAND: The former England keeper didn’t have too much to deal with other than the penalty. Dealt with few long-range efforts with little fuss and kicked with confidence. 7

JAMES TAVERNIER: Tucked home the opening penalty to ease the Ibrox nerves but couple of sloppy moments saw the crowd on his back again. 6

CONNOR GOLDSON: Coming into a game of this importance was a big ask for a man who has played just 90 minutes in the last three months but Beale’s Mr Dependable never put a foot wrong. 7

JOHN SOUTTAR: The Scotland defender’s blunder gifted Killie their shock opening day win but made amends with a surging run from defence that opened up Servette for the second. 7

BORNA BARISIC: The Croatian has been in the firing line since the weekend but answered his critics with a decent display capped off by a pin-point cross that put in Dessers to score. 7
