Rangers legend sends message of support to 'loveable' former Ibrox teammate after 'difficult' news

Rangers legend Brian Laudrup says Andy Goram is in his thoughts after the former goalkeeper's cancer diagnosis.

Nicknamed 'The Goalie' during his playing days, the Ibrox icon formed part of Cambuslang Rangers' coaching staff this season as they won West of Scotland Football League Conference B.

It was confirmed last week by the Premiership champions that he was undergoing treatment for cancer, wishing their former player well at a 'difficult time.'

Laudrup played a part in the Light Blues' nine-in-a-row run during the 1990s alongside Goram and is keen for him to make a swift recovery.

The Danish football legend was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma - a form of cancer affecting white blood cells - in 2010. He underwent a decade of treatment before the all-clear was given two years ago.

He told the Daily Mail of the former Motherwell keeper and Airdrie coach: "It's always terrible when you hear about one of your former team-mates being struck down by that illness. I've been there myself.

"I don't know any of the details of The Goalie's condition and it's important we respect the family's need for privacy.

"But I wrote a text to him just about my experience and to offer support. All you can do is stay strong. Because you need all of your strength.

"I'm sure The Goalie will have people around him supporting him. That's important. I just keep my fingers crossed. He was a fantastic goalkeeper but I think he's an even better human being.

"The Goalie has a great sense of humour and we enjoyed each other's company a lot. I've always thought of him as a loveable character."
