Rangers legend's coaching impact praised as former East Kilbride boss eyes reunion with Ibrox icon and backroom crew

Chris Aitken had an emerging coaching talent and an old ally by his side at East Kilbride - with a Rangers icon helping balance out his perfect backroom crew.

The former Morton player is currently out of the game for the first time in 25 years following his shock departure as boss from the Lowland League club last month.

With him in his coaching circle during his stint at K-Park - which lasted less than a year - were ex-Ton teammate David MacGregor, u20s head coach Martin Fellowes and Rangers icon Durrant.

It was an ideal blend for Aitken. MacGregor provided a trustworthy coach to bounce ideas off, Fellowes' work has earned him a chance to coach within the Scotland youth ranks and Durrant had 246 Light Blues appearances to call upon.

For the former Kilby boss, he hopes that the quartet can get together again once he finds himself a new management gig.

Aitken said: "I wouldn't have wanted my coaching setup any other way to be honest. I brought it in David MacGregor, we made our debuts together at Morton 25 years ago.

"I knew he would bring us professionalism. With Martin, you don't get involved in Scotland set-ups if you aren't a good coach.

"He's got a great coaching brain. There was then nobody better to oversee things than Ian Durrant. When he needed to bring me down a level, a kick up the backside, he did that.

"If training wasn't good enough, I just had to look over, and he'd give me the nod.

"When I had him keeping me right, and with David and Martin keeping me right too, I had a great wee set-up. In a perfect world, could the four of us get reunited?

"I would absolutely love it. But we'll need to see if it happens."
