Rangers could only throw title away if they beat Celtic but old claim is impossible to imagine – Kenny Miller

An Old Firm game doesn’t really need hyped up.

If Rangers were playing Celtic at tiddlywinks, it would still feel like lives depended on it. But when I think about next Sunday’s derby at Ibrox – and what it could mean to Rangers, in particular – I can’t remember a bigger one. Genuinely, in terms of importance, I’m not sure there’s been an Old Firm as huge as this for at least a DECADE. That’s how massive it is for Philippe Clement ’s side.

After yesterday’s 3-1 victory over Hibs at Ibrox, Rangers are still in pole position with regards to winning the title race. And I believe if they can see off Brendan Rodgers’ side next Sunday they WILL be crowned champions. Rangers have eight games left in the Premiership – and two of them are against Celtic. And this is the first time in a number of years we’ve had a proper fight for the flag.

If you’re the team in front, a draw against your closest rivals isn’t a bad result. But in this fixture’s history, no Celtic or Rangers manager has ever gone into a derby looking for a point.

That’s just rubbish. It’s impossible to imagine. What I would say ahead of Sunday is that IF Rangers lose the game the title is still alive.

They would probably only be a point back with games still to play. But if they were to win it? The championship would be theirs to lose.

Honestly, if they take three points off Rodgers’ men, Rangers could then only throw the title away. They would be overwhelming favourites. And my gut feeling is that three points at the weekend will see them over the line.

Of course, it will be nip and tuck with another gigantic derby to come at Parkhead. Could Celtic still salvage it? Yes. But they would need Rangers to drop six points before the end of the season.

I just can’t
