Rangers could play Dundee at neutral venue as SPFL reveal alternative plans in case of third Dens Park washout

Dundee vs Rangers could be played at a neutral venue if next Wednesday's re-arranged fixture proves tiobe another wash out.

The Dens Park pitch farce rumbles on after a second attempt at playing the Premiership clash failed this week. Heavy rain meant a second afternoon pitch inspection was failed and the clash is now scheduled to take place on Wednesday 17 April, kick-off 8pm. That resulted in a stinging statement being released by Rangers, blasting the Dark Blues and claiming the situation could have been avoided.

Tony Docherty's team are locked in a three-way battle for the last top six spot, which now may not be decided this weekend depending on the result between Motherwell and Hibs, as well as the dee's trip to Pittodrie. There's also the small matter of the Gers fighting rivals Celtic for the league title. And now the SPFL have confirmed one of their backup options for next week is playing the game at an alternative venue.

Ibrox boss Philippe Clement is happy to play behind closed doors, and while league chiefs haven't said whether or not that will be the case, they have promised that a call will be made well in advance of game day.

A SPFL statement read: “We confirmed yesterday that the Dundee v Rangers game is rescheduled for 8pm on Wednesday April 17 at Dens Park, live on Sky Sports.

“We have been in extensive discussions with both clubs about arrangements if, for whatever reason, the match cannot be played at Dens Park on Wednesday. These include the possibility of the match moving to an alternative venue.

“We will confirm these arrangements as soon as possible, and well in advance of Wednesday’s match.”
