Rangers ascendancy over Celtic 'hammered home' as season's first proves a big deal to Sportscene pundit

Michael Stewart refused to play down Rangers hitting the top if the Premiership table for the first time this season.

Philippe Clement's side new a win against St Johnstone in Perth would take them top of the pile after Celtic conceded a stoppage time equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock at Parkhead on Saturday. And the Light Blues showed no mercy as they scored three without reply at McDiarmid Park.

The mood on either side of Glasgow could not be more contrasting after Clement has overseen a nine point swing to hit the front, with the Ibrox side now favourites to go on a lift a first league title since 2021. And while there is still plenty of football to play, Stewart reckons this weekend is massive in terms of the title race.

“I think it is significant in the fact that it’s the first time they’ve been able to get top of the table since Philippe Clement has come in,” he said on Sportscene.

“It just continues the momentum that has been built up since that appointment. On the back of the disappointment for Celtic yesterday, it just helps to hammer home the ascendency that Rangers have got just now.”
