Ralf Rangnick will face a huge issue that haunted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United

It feels somewhat strange that Manchester United didn't fully support Ralf Rangnick in the January transfer window, considering he's taking up a consultancy role at the end of the season.

United's interim manager probably expected at least one new addition to enter the Old Trafford doors because the team has underachieved throughout the season so far.

At the start of the campaign, United were expected to be title challengers, but as we've seen, they're miles away from competing for the big trophies.

Rangnick was brought in to implement change, and while he's only lost once during his short spell in charge, it's clear that some squad problems needed to be addressed. Yes, getting rid of players who needed game time can only be praised, but not replacing them is a massive risk.

The two big names to leave United until the end of the season were Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek. Both weren't getting the regular game time they needed to get their careers back on track, which has resulted in moves to Sevilla and Everton.

While it feels like the right decision to let these players leave, not replacing them or addressing some of the gaping holes in the team could come back to haunt Rangnick.

When you look at the transfer activity of Liverpool and Manchester City, who've both improved their teams with signings, it makes you wonder why United didn't think of bringing someone in. Yes, Rangnick is only the interim manager, but he's taking up a consultancy role, as noted before! He'll probably have a say in who comes in for next season.

January's transfer activity (or lack of it) has left Rangnick with a weaker squad. Not replacing any departing players feels criminal, more so when you factor in what happened last season
