Ralf Rangnick's protégé raises doubts over McTominay's position in Manchester United midfield

Manchester United seem to have found their best starting eleven under Ralf Rangnick and a formation that best suits the personnel he has at his disposal.

Many United fans wondered how the German would get Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo into the same team and still retain balance, but the 4-3-3 seems to have solved that problem.

The former RB Leipzig manager and protege of Rangnick, Jesse Marsch, has had his say on his mentor's changes on this United team.

In an interview with The Athletic, he said: "I'm excited to see Pogba back after injury and what Rangnick can accomplish with him. I can see Pogba, Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes starting together. The way they've played with the 4-3-3- recently, I think Pogba fits in well there."

"Fernandes can play as one of the eights or in one of the wider positions. It could look really good. Fred can be the disciplined guy, sitting deep. You could have one six and two eights, or be more like PSG with two sixes and Bruno as a No 10 in a 4-2-3-1. But I reckon they will stick with 4-3-3."

The American has understandably heaped praise on United's talismans of Fernandes and Pogba, but it seems from Marsch comments he sees Fred as the third midfielder, which goes against Rangnick's current strategy to deploy Scott McTominay as the six instead.

McTominay has been functional in the role but hasn't set the world alight, which could open the door for Fred, but given the Brazilian's tendency to lose possession and also get bullied off the ball at times, it seems that the Scottish midfield is the most practical choice at this moment in time.
