Rafael Nadal set to return to training as Canadian Open official confirms ‘he’s made hotel reservations’

Rafael Nadal is on course to compete in the upcoming North American hard-court swing, including the Canadian Open and US Open, with the Spaniard expected to make his return to the practice court following his injury layoff.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner aggravated an abdominal injury during his Wimbledon quarter-final win over Taylor Fritz from the United States and subsequently withdrew from his semi-final clash against Nick Kyrgios.

During a press conference, Nadal revealed that he should be fully recovered in three to four weeks and hopes to play a “normal calendar” after that.

And it appears he remains on schedule to make his return in the next few weeks as the Canadian Open Tournament Director Eugene Lapierre has confirmed that he is expected to play in the ATP Masters 1000 event.

“He’s made hotel reservations and he has asked us to send him a case of the balls we’re using for the tournament,” Lapierre said.

“He should return to training on Monday.”

The Canadian Open starts on August 8 in Montreal with Nadal likely to also play in the Cincinnati Masters the following week before the North American campaign draws to a conclusion with the US Open at Flushing Meadows from August 29 to September 11.
