Rabada, Jansen, Ismail nominated for ICC awards despite topsy-turvy Proteas season

Proteas fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Shabnim Ismail and all-rounder Marco Jansen were the only South Africans nominated for the ICC Awards 2022.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recognise and celebrate the achievement of players and teams over the past year, with the nominees for each category decided by their Awards Panel, which comprises prominent journalists and broadcasters from across the globe.

Rabada was the Proteas' shining light as he finished as the joint-highest Test wicket-taker of 2022.

Rabada picked up 47 wickets in only nine Test matches at a remarkable average of 22.25 and a devastating strike rate of 34.1.

He also registered two five-wicket hauls, with best figures of five for 52 against England at Lord's.

Rabada finished on 47 scalps alongside Australian spinner Nathan Lyon, who took four wickets in this week's innings and 182-run win against the Proteas in Melbourne.

Rabada is nominated for ICC Test Cricketer of the Year alongside England duo Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Australian opener Usman Khawaja.

The evergreen Ismail continues to get better as she ended as the women's highest ODI wicket-taker of the year, taking 37 wickets in 17 ODIs.

Ismail picked up consecutive four-wicket hauls during South Africa's home series against the West Indies.

Then, she took 14 wickets at the Proteas' Women's World Cup campaign, which included a superb spell of three for 27 against the hosts in Hamilton, pivotal in helping the Proteas advance to the semi-finals.

In a World Cup year, Ismail is nominated for the ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year award alongside Australian Alyssa Healy, New Zealander Amelia Kerr and England
