The Railwaymen suffered relegation to the fourth-tier at the start of the decade and spent three seasons at this level before securing promotion in 1994.

Under the guidance of Dario Gradi, the club managed to reach new heights in 1997 when they sealed a place in the second-tier thanks to a 1-0 victory over Brentford in the play-off final.
