Queen of the South signing comes off the bench to score on debut

Summer signing Kyle Doherty couldn’t have asked for a better debut as he helped Queens to their first three points of the campaign away to Edinburgh City.

The striker, who joined from Clyde on a two-year deal, has been out injured since pre-season but made an impact when he came off the bench to score in Saturday’s 2-1 win.

He said: “It couldn’t have been a better start really, getting a goal and the team getting the three points. I’ve been out with injury, and I’ve been trying my best to get back and help the team. The 21-year old spent a few days on crutches following an injury in training and has been chomping at the bit to get his Queens career started.

The forward has credited making the switch to full-time football in helping speed up his recovery process.

He explained: “It’s been frustrating, I had a wee niggle when I came in and I managed to get back but then I got another knock. Mentally it’s been tough but the gaffer always kept me on a high, the physios have done their best to get me back and I’m delighted to be back on the field.

“I’m in every day and getting the treatment that I need, when you’re part-time you need to take it into your own hands so I’m grateful to the staff for their help.”

Doherty made an impact as soon as he came on but paid tribute to fellow substitute Lewis Gibson for his assist.

He said: “I’ve seen how good Gibbo is at crossing the ball in training, so I thought I would just hang out and the defender might not come with me, and he has put it right to my toe and I’ve side footed it in.

“I’m buzzing to get off the mark
