Queen of the South boss urges fans to enjoy derby bragging rights

Manager Marvin Bartley dismissed the delights of derby day bragging rights and told how they were for the fans to savour.

The Queen of the South boss instead insisted he was already looking towards next weekend’s away day with Cove Rangers after ditching Annan 3-1 in their first ever league encounter.

And Bartley was also adamant that despite trailing one-nil to a bizarre own goal plus Gavin Reilly rifling a penalty over the bar he never thought it was going to be one of those days.

He said: “I never think it is going to be one of those days.

“The hardest thing in football after scoring goals is creating the chances and if we weren’t creating the chances then it would be more of a worry.

“I always knew we were going to get one and although hindsight
is a wonderful thing, I genuinely knew we would go on to get one goal.

“I just needed that goal to come early enough and didn’t want another 80th minute goal like Edinburgh City.

“I always had confidence in the players that they would turn it around.”

Bartley appeared more relieved than ecstatic after racking up Queens’ first home win of the season and said of the local derby triumph: “It’s great, but it’s probably great more for the fans isn’t it?

“For me, I’m very, very boring and it’s more about the fans and I have kind of moved on and it is not the massive celebrations and the fireworks you are looking for are
not there and my attention has moved on to Cove.

“This was about getting a win for the players and for the effort they put in. The bragging rights they are more for the fans to go and celebrate and I hope they do go and enjoy it.
