Queen of the South boss urges players to be on lookout for early goal

Manager Peter Murphy has warned his Queen of the South troops to be on the lookout for an early goal in tonight’s clash at East Kilbride.

He is determined his side will keep it tight at the back in their latest Premier Sports League Cup game.

The South had a free Saturday at the weekend due to how the fixtures panned out with five teams in their group.

Now they take on East Kilbride a week after disposing of Dumbarton 2-0 at home last Tuesday night at Palmerston.

And on that same night Airdrie whacked East Kilbride 8-0 after an early goal spree and then they lost 4-0 to Aberdeen at the weekend.

Murphy, below, said: “We have been doing our assessment and analysis on them.

“They are a good footballing side.

“They conceded within two minutes against Airdrie and we know from Saturday against Aberdeen that if you concede in the first five or ten minutes then you have a mountain to climb.

“We need to have a look at that and we have to be better than we were in the first half against Dumbarton.

“The players will be looking forward to that and the build-up to Tuesday night.”

Frontman Leighton McIntosh grabbed his first goal for the club against Dumbarton since joining from Arbroath and is looking for more this evening at K Park.

He said: “It is good to get off the mark. It is so important for a striker’s confidence.

“And it’s good to get chances especially before the league starts.

“Having the break between the Dumbarton and East Kilbride games is good and gives us time to reflect on things.

“It will be an interesting game against a team who are round about our level and we are obviously going to try and build on our momentum.”
