Queen of the South boss has "plenty to work on" after first home league win

Peter Murphy savoured his first home league win as Queen of the South manager but stressed: “We have got plenty to work on.”

The Doonhamers surged back from a goal down in the second half to clinch the points with two goals in two minutes from Kieran McKechnie and Mikey Hewitt.

But they had to soak up a chunk of first half pressure from Cove who also hit the bar late on in stoppage time with a fine long-distance curling shot from Declan Glass.

Murphy now has to plot the downfall of his former club Annan in this weekend’s first derby clash of the season at Palmerston.

He waved away the thoughts of a dramatic Dumfriesshire derby and said: “I am getting over this game and have still to analyse what we could do better.

“But with the players getting a draw and a win they will have plenty of confidence and will be looking forward to the Annan game which has an added little bit of spice.

“Wullie Gibson, their manager, is an ex-manager and player here and he is an ex-player of mine and they’ve started the season quite well and we have started well, although we can do a lot better.

“We look forward to it, but we need to pay attention as to what has just happened and how we can get better from that.”

He said of the triumph: “It’s a good win in the end. But we expected Cove to come here after that bad result last week losing to Annan and be up for the game, and they probably got a boot from their manager.

“And that’s the way they came and played. In the first half I thought they were excellent, it forced us to tweak our shape slightly as I felt we were being overrun and Declan Glass was playing really, really well for them.
