Pundit agrees with Roy Keane on Virgil van Dijk comments after Liverpool FC vs Manchester United

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has disagreed with Virgil van Dijk's claim that Manchester United were not out to win Sunday's goalless draw between the two sides.

United came away from Anfield with a hard-earned point after keeping Liverpool at bay. Jurgen Klopp's side had scored at least two goals in every other home game this season but struggled to find their groove in an unusually flat atmosphere.

Speaking after the result, a frustrated Van Dijk insisted Liverpool were the only team trying to win and that United were 'buzzing' with the point. The defender's comments were labelled as 'arrogant' by Roy Keane and McManaman has now also disagreed with what he had to say.

Asked by Betfred if he agreed with Van Dijk's comments, McManaman responded: “No. I thought Manchester United would be organised, make themselves hard to beat and counter-attack whenever the opportunity arose.

"Arguably, Rasmus Hojlund had the best chance of the game so I don’t believe it was a case of only one team wanting to win. Manchester United didn’t want to lose and it was very important for them to avoid a defeat considering the week they have had and being knocked out of all European competition.

“The last thing they would have wanted to do is fight fire with fire and lose 3-0 because the pressure would have intensified on both the players and the manager. The most important thing to do when you’re in times of trouble and you’re facing heavy criticism, is to not lose. They need to go forward in their next few matches, be creative and start winning games.”
