Proteas women's squad unveiled for historic Test against Australia

Cricket South Africa on Friday confirmed a 14-player squad for the Proteas women's historic one-off Test against Australia.

The four-day Test will take place at the West Australia Cricket Association (WACA) Ground in Perth from 15-18 February. It forms part of the SA women's ongoing tour of Australia.

It will be South Africa's first four-day match since they played England in June 2022.

Six players earn their maiden Test call-up, namely top-order batter Tazmin Brits, seamers Masabata Klaas and Ayanda Hlubi, as well as all-rounders Eliz-Mari Marx and Delmi Tucker, along with wicket-keeper Mieke de Ridder.

Joining the uncapped players are seven team-mates who played a crucial role in the Proteas' memorable drawn encounter against England at the Taunton Cricket Ground. This includes captain Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp, Anneke Bosch, Nadine de Klerk, and Sinalo Jafta, along with Sune Luus and Nonkululeko Mlaba.

Kapp left an indelible mark in the previous Test against England with a record-breaking innings of 150 off 213 balls.

Chloe Tryon, who missed out on the Test two years ago due to injury, is also back having played her single red-ball cap against India in 2014.

The only alteration in the squad currently duelling Australia in the white-ball leg of the tour is the omission of medium pacer Ayabonga Khaka, who has chosen not to participate in red-ball cricket.

"It's a great opportunity for us as a team, it's another one in a while again, so I think especially with the youngsters, they're very excited to challenge themselves and to test their skills in the longer format and in women's cricket, it hasn't been something we've been familiar with," Proteas women's coach Hilton Moreeng said.
