Prichard Colon: Who is the boxer Deontay Wilder referenced in press conference?

An emotional Deontay Wilder broke down in tears last night during his post-fight press conference following his knockout victory against Robert Helenius.

The state of fellow boxer Prichard Colon was the reason for Wilder’s upset as he discussed the dangers of boxing.

It is a different side to what we are used to from the heavyweight and the sad story of Colon will resonate with many.

Although the American got a first-round victory after knocking Helenius out, he wasn't in too much of a celebratory mood and instead used his presser to bring awareness to the dangers of the sport, highlighting Colon's story as the prime example of what can go wrong inside the ropes.

During his career, Colon was an excellent super welterweight and had won his opening 16 professional fights.

Back in October 2015, the 30-year-old took on Terrel Williams in Virginia on the undercard of the Lamont Peterson and Feliz Diaz fight.

Colon was in front after the first few rounds during the fight, but it would later take a turn for the worse.

Williams punched Colon illegally in the back of the head on multiple occasions but the referee didn’t step in.

Colon was then knocked down for the first time in his professional career after the illegal blows had been allowed to continue.

In between rounds, he spoke to the ringside doctor and stated that he felt dizzy but felt he could carry on.

He was later disqualified when his corner wrongfully removed his gloves as they thought it was the end of the encounter.

After the fight, the man nicknamed the Digget was taken to hospital as he was vomiting and experiencing dizziness.

He was diagnosed with brain bleeding and was then put into a coma for 221 days.
