Police vow to leave "no stone unturned" to catch culprits as shocking video shows chaos in St Peter's Square
Police have vowed to leave "no stone unturned" in a bid to identify those behind two nights of disorder in Manchester city centre. The pledge comes after a shocking video captured the chaos which erupted in St Peter's Square last night.
The footage shows fights breaking out amongst youths with one being dragged across the ground and then police moving in rapidly to make arrests.
The trouble resulted in four police officers being assaulted as hundreds of people ran amok in Piccadilly Gardens and the city's revamped St Peter's Square on which the magnificent Central Library and Cenotaph stand, as well as tram stop.
The first disruption was Friday when police attended two incidents in the city centre. At about 3pm a large group of school children congregating in the Market Street and Piccadilly Gardens area ran riot on the last day of school.
For several hours, there was chaos as cops and passers-by were egged, trams were stopped and businesses closed. GMP and senior councillors have promised a full investigation saying the force says it ‘will not tolerate or accept this level of disorder or disruption in Manchester’.
Officers were drafted into to the area to reassure people in the area and workers from surrounding businesses. As a result, there were three arrests made on suspicion of public order offences. The males were bailed whilst investigations continue.
The mayhem came to an end when Tactical Aid Unit officers were deployed and successfully corralled the teenagers onto Piccadilly Gardens itself. Hundreds had earlier moved from the Market Street tram stop, down to the Arndale centre, and back up to Oldham Street
