Police reveal details of 'melee' involving 'knives and machetes' as teenager fights for life

A teenager is still fighting for his life in hospital after being seriously injured in a 'melee' involving 'knives and machetes'. Police were called to an incident in Bury on Thursday after an 18-year-old man suffered 'life-changing injuries'.

Officers were called to Abingdon Avenue in Whitefield just after 5pm, and discovered that the teenager had been stabbed to the arm. Today, (Sat), Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that the victim remains in a critical condition in hospital.

In a further update, the force described the incident as a 'melee' involving up to six men, and said weapons including knives and machetes had been wielded. A 49-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

The 18-year-old man remains in police custody, while the 49-year-old man has been bailed with conditions. Officers also arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder, but have since released him under investigation.

GMP have set up a webpage where any witnesses can submit information to assist the force. On the page, the force released further details surrounding the incident.

The update read: "On Thursday 28/03/24 at 17.01hrs three males are seen on Sawley Avenue, walking towards Rufford Drive. One male is on a bike the other two are walking.

"They meet a group of three other males and a melee occurs, during this 3 or 4 of the males are seen to have weapons, knives and machetes and are swinging them at the opposing group. 4 out of the 6 males leave Sawley Avenue along an alley onto Milton Close and then down Abingdon Avenue."

It said the 18-year-old collapsed on Abingdon Avenue. The update continued:
