Police investigating incident on main road near town centre as man taken to hospital

Police are investigating after an incident on a main road near Rochdale town centre that left a man in hospital.

A stretch of Whitworth Road, near to the junction with Haynes Street, was cordoned off by police yesterday afternoon (Thursday). The road was taped off between Princess Street and St Mary's Gate.

Officers were first called to the scene at around 2.45pm, police said. A man was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening or serious.

Greater Manchester Police have not confirmed the nature of the incident at this stage. Enquiries are ongoing to 'establish the full circumstances', a spokesperson said.

Pictures taken at the scene show officers guarding both ends of the cordon, which remained in place into the evening. One man who worked nearby said 'it went crazy' with police arriving.

"It just went crazy around here," he said. "The police have closed the road off.

"We heard no noise, no screaming, nothing like that. The police have just said that there is an incident and it's a crime scene."

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 2:45pm on Thursday 1 September 2022, police attended an incident on Whitworth Road, Rochdale. A male was taken to hospital to receive treatment for injuries that are believed to not be serious or life threatening.

"Enquiries are ongoing at this moment in time to understand the full circumstances."
