Police implement sudden new powers after violence rocks Greater Manchester area

Stop-and-search powers have been stepped up in an area of Oldham after reports of a ‘group of men with weapons’ and an incident that has left a man with life changing injuries.

Officers have been given extra powers under Section 60 and 60AA to stop and search people in Royton following a ‘number of incidents of disorder’ last night (May 5).

The order allows police to stop and search anyone they have reason to believe is conducting criminal activities and carrying offensive weapons, or to direct them to remove face coverings. It is in place from 8pm tonight (May 5) until 4am tomorrow.

Earlier today, police arrested two boys on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon following an attack in Rochdale Road, Royton. The pair were arrested further afield in Oldham after smashing and flipping a vehicle thought to have been used in the robbery.

Superintendent Phil Hutchinson of GMP Oldham District, said: “Our officers are conducting several enquiries, but I fully understand that the nature of these incidents and our increased presence in the community will spark some concern.

“Please be assured that we are working round the clock to ensure the safety of the local community and to do this we have increased visible officers across the district to provide added reassurance to the public. If you have any concerns, or would like to share some information with them, please do not hesitate to speak to them; they are there to help you.
