Police give update on Bolton vs Morecambe investigation after alleged racist abuse sees game suspended

Police investigating alleged racist abuse that saw Bolton Wanderers' match at Morecambe suspended on Sautrday afternoon have made an arrest.

The match at Morecambe FC's Mazuma Stadium was suspended for 10 minutes and both sets of players were taken off the pitch following the allegations of racist abuse directed towards the Wanderers' dugout.

Lancashire Police are now investigating.

In an update on Sunday, officers from the force's Morecambe division said enquiries so far had seen one man arrested.

A 61-year-old man from Morecambe has been held on suspicion of racially aggravated public order and he remains in custody, they said.

"Other lines of enquiry relating to the allegations of racism are being developed and we continue to take the matter extremely seriously," they added.

Following the game, Bolton manager Ian Evatt said he belived stopping the game for a time was the correct course of action, but said he did not entertain the idea of cancelling the fixture.

The game finished 1-1 after Wanderers' Amadou Bakayoko's late equaliser cancelled out Cole Stockton's opener.

A number of Bolton fans were also arrested at the match on suspicion of assault, pitch encroachment and of being drunk and disorderly.

They have now been bailed, released under investigation or given fixed penalty notices the police said in today's update.

One, Michael Haslam, 29, of Heathside Grove, Manchester, has been charged with pitch encroachment and is due to appear before magistrates in Lancaster on March 1.
