Police descend on Northern Quarter as man, 31, 'resists arrest'

Officers descended on Manchester city centre after a man was 'resisting arrest' in the Northern Quarter. A large police presence was seen at Lever Street and Houldsworth Street this morning (August 24).

Eyewitnesses claimed the area was 'full of police cars' as officers dealt with an incident. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers attended an incident on Lever Street at 11.40am.

The incident involved a 31-year-old man who was resisting arrest, GMP says. He has since been detained and taken into custody.

An eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News : "I saw loads [of police]. It was about 11.45am. It was like the whole force had turned up. I think it was only for one guy as well."

Locals also raised concern about the police presence on social media. One person wrote on Twitter: "Just seen like 20 police cars zoom through the Northern Quarter in Manchester... what's going on?"

Another said: "Lever Street is full of police cars and vans but no idea what’s happening." Further details about the nature of the incident which led to the 31-year-old man's arrest are yet to be confirmed.
