Police continue to investigate alleged racist abuse at Bolton Wanderers v Morecambe match

A man arrested following an alleged racist incident during Bolton Wanderers' match at Morecambe has been released under investigation.

Wanderers host Morecambe at the University of Bolton Stadium tonight (Tuesday March 8) but last month's reverse fixture at Morecambe FC's Mazuma Stadium was suspended for 10 minutes and both sets of players were taken off the pitch following the allegations of racist abuse directed towards the Bolton dugout.

A 61-year-old from Morecambe was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order and bailed. His bail expired on March 6, Lancashire Police confirmed, so he has now been released but remains under police investigation.

Following the game, Bolton manager Ian Evatt said he believed stopping the game for a time was the correct course of action, but said he did not entertain the idea of cancelling the fixture.

The game finished 1-1 after Wanderers' Amadou Bakayoko's late equaliser cancelled out Cole Stockton's opener. A number of Bolton fans were also arrested at the match on suspicion of assault, pitch encroachment and of being drunk and disorderly.

After pleading guilty to going onto the playing area without lawful authority or excuse, Michael Haslam, 29, of Worsley was given a conditional discharge at Lancaster Magistrates Court.
