Pirates coach Jose Riveiro on his first Soweto derby: 'It was quite boring to be honest'

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has labelled his first taste of a Soweto derby as "bad" game. 

The Buccaneers suffered a 1-0 defeat at FNB Stadium thanks to an outrageous strike from Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart in the 74th minute. It sent AmaKhosi fans into pandemonium. 

The defeat left Riveiro with plenty to ponder as his side have a mountain to climb if they still have any hope of challenging for the DStv Premiership title. They currently sit in fifth place, two points off arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs and nine points off table toppers Mamelodi Sundowns who have a game in hand. 

Despite playing in front of a sold-out crowd, Riveiro does not believe that the game matched expectations and described it as a "slow" and "boring game". 

"From my point of view, it was a bad game and a very slow game," Riveiro told reporters.  

"The game was played in a rhythm that we didn't expect it to be played, also from our opponents. I think it was quite boring to be honest. 

"We didn't manage to be vertical; Chiefs was giving us the space to play outside and defending with numbers in that corridors." 

Riveiro bemoaned the naivety in his side's attacking display as he felt his players were disconnected in the first half, despite having the better opening five minutes of the game. 

"Our build-up from central midfield to the players up front was deficient.

"We couldn't generate so much football inside, the way we used to do it to create our chances so we only had the chance to go outside and from outside we were not dangerous enough. 

"We managed to break possession a few times on the left side, we had more space in the first half on the left side, but we were too naïve in our attacks.
