Philippe Clement urged to break Rangers tinkerman habit as Lee McCulloch admits Ibrox need for speed

Lee McCulloch has urged Philippe Clement not to be Rangers' tinkerman like his predecessors.

All eyes are on Ibrox this weekend as the Belgian takes charge of the Light Blues for the first time since being appointed on a three-and-a-half-year deal. Hibs provide the opposition, as they did for Gio van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale in their first games in the job. Clement admits he needs time to change things, but judgements will be made on his first 90 minutes, as is the way in Glasgow.

McCulloch wants to see Gers get the ball forward quicker in contrast to Michael Beale's patient, possession-based approach. But he is also keen for some consistency of shape after watching Beale and van Bronckhorst before him chop and change depending on whether they were playing Premiership or European opposition. "I think from the start of the season they've lacked playing in the final third," he told BBC Scotland. "They've been concentrating on a lot of possession football across the back, into midfield and back out, playing little patterns.

"I'd like to see exciting football. I'd like to see the ball forward quickly and that doesn't mean lumping it forward to a centre forward from centre half.

"They've got good players there who can play through, get the ball wide and get the ball in the box. It'll be interesting to see what formation he decides to go for, if he is sticking to one formation.

"The formation was tinkered with quite a lot between domestic games and Europe and a couple of previous managers did the same. it will be interesting if Philippe sticks to the one formation or changes it game by game.

"I want to see more football in the attacking third and having teams hemmed in. Possession based football, but in the final third."
