Philippe Clement plotting Rangers rebuild around Jack Butland as he declares 'if you have a s*** keeper you win nothing'

New boss Philippe Clement is still casting an eye over his Rangers’ squad and deciding who can do a job for him.

But after two weeks as Ibrox gaffer he has already made up his mind on Jack Butland. And the Belgian boss wants to build his new-look team around the 30-year-old keeper. Wherever he has been previously, Clement has relied on a strong personality between the sticks. Not only does his goalie have to produce on the pitch, they need to be a big character off it as well. And in his time in charge of Rangers, he has been convinced Butland has all of those qualities.

The Englishman – signed from Crystal Palace on a free transfer in the summer – was outstanding in their 0-0 Europa League draw against Czech side Sparta Prague on Thursday night. Butland looks like being ex-manager Michael Beale’s best signing – and Clement plans to reap the benefits.

At old club Brugge he won two titles on the trot with Simon Mignolet in goal. The former Liverpool and Sunderland goalie was pivotal to Clement’s success and the Rangers boss can already see similarities between him and Butland.

Ahead of Sunday's Premiership clash with Hearts at Ibrox, he said: “It’s clear that when you have a s*** goalkeeper you can’t have success! That’s the same for every manager.

“Of course you have to keep clean sheets. That’s not just down to the keeper or the defence, it’s the whole team working together. But to have REAL success and to win trophies, you need to have somebody who gives the team life in the hard moments.
