Phil Foden could get surprise Man City role vs Newcastle if Pep Guardiola rests key players

Where are all the captains?

Pep Guardiola said he would have to rest Kyle Walker and Ruben Dias due to their workload, and Bernardo Silva remains out along with Kevin De Bruyne. With Rodri suspended, that could see all five newly-elected members of the Manchester City leadership group out of the starting XI at Newcastle.

So who would wear the armband in a situation that may not have been expected so soon into the season? In terms of longevity, Ederson is the next most senior player but is likely to be rested for cup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. After that, Phil Foden is the player who has been with the first team the longest, stepping up around 2017. Could Wednesday be the first time that Foden wears the City armband?

Guardiola said on Friday he would give Dias a chance to be fit, and otherwise he would 'have to find one' to be captain instead. Other options would be Nathan Ake or Manu Akanji - both have captained their previous sides on occasion - while Mateo Kovacic has leadership qualities if he is to return. With a young, fringe XI set to be named, there are few contenders to lead the team if Walker and Dias sit out. Foden would be a popular choice, and it would potentially be the first of many times he walks out as City captain if that is a role he could take up later in his career.
