"Perfect wing-back for Conte" - Journalist raves over £15m "machine" Tottenham now want to sign

Tottenham Hotspur target Joakim Maehle ‘could be the perfect wing-back’ for manager Antonio Conte, according to Italian football expert Conor Clancy.

Maehle is believed to be on the radar of the Spurs hierarchy with the summer transfer window just around the corner and could arrive at Hotspur Way imminently.

The Denmark international become a household name when he played a pivotal part in his nation reaching the semi-finals of a memorable Euro 2020 tournament.

However, Maehle has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth for his club in the current campaign, featuring from the off in just 15 Serie A fixtures.

The 25-year-old’s limited game time has seen him linked with a move away from the Gewiss Stadium, and Tottenham have emerged as a potential suitor.

According to the Daily Mail, the north London outfit are tracking Maehle as they look to solve their issues at left-wing back, although the Scandinavian is comfortable on either flank.

It’s claimed that Tottenham’s Italian director of football Fabio Paratici already successfully raided Serie A for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in January, and he is set to return there for the defender.

Clancy is a big admirer of Maehle’s and revealed that he believes he is ‘one of the best wing-backs in Italy’ and could be a perfect fit for Conte’s preferred tactical setup.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think he should be starting every week for Atalanta because I think he’s that good.

“I think he’s one of the best wing-backs in Italy when he plays, but he’s not been playing, and I think if he went and joined Tottenham, he could be the perfect wing-back for Conte and in England as well.”
