PIF would land "big coup" for Newcastle with deal for "fabulous" £60m star - journalist

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips would be a “big coup” for Newcastle United if they manage to bring him to St James’ Park this summer, claims journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Tyneside club are just one outfit who have been linked with the 26-year-old.

According to the Daily Express, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool are all set to battle it out for Phillips’ signature in the upcoming transfer window.

The same outlet states that the England international could cost his next club £60m, with him currently being one of Leeds’ most prized possessions.

Prior, the Daily Mail had reported that Newcastle were also interested in Phillips, so he is not short of admirers.

In January, it was said that West Ham had a £50m bid for Phillips turned down by Leeds, so it would not be a surprise to see them enter the race this summer, too.

If Eddie Howe and PIF manage to land Phillips, O’Rourke thinks it would be quite the bit of business.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “To get somebody of Kalvin Phillips’ calibre in there, it’s going to be a big coup for them. A top England international in the team as well, something that Newcastle can build on as they look to close the gap on the top sides.”

No. However, he has struggled with injury, so he should not be judged too harshly for his lack of impact.

When Phillips is fit, he brings a lot to the midfield. Last term, only two Leeds players managed to make more tackles per league game than Phillips, who was averaging 2.6 (via WhoScored). His average of 4.7 long balls was also the highest among the Whites’ outfield players, showing his ability when in possession.

His form saw him make
