Pep Guardiola sends Chelsea message and what Roman Abramovich's sanctions mean for Man City

Your Manchester City headlines for Thursday, March 10.

City boss Pep Guardiola expressed sympathy for Thomas Tuchel and his players after Chelsea were impacted by the sanctions placed upon their owner. The ramifications come amid the conflict in Ukraine with the UK government targeting Russian oligarchs.

Roman Abramovich has had his assets frozen by the government. As it stands, the club cannot sell tickets for games beyond the season ticket sales that are already accounted for and will be unable to conduct business in the transfer window.

Guardiola was asked about the revelations ahead of his side's Premier League game with Crystal Palace on Monday. And while he did not want to comment on the club sanctions without knowing the full story, he sympathised with the playing staff.

Simon Bajkowski has the full story.

English and world football has been rocked by the news that Chelsea owner Abramovich has been sanctioned by the government. In light of Russia's continued war in Ukraine, Abramovich is one of seven oligarchs now targeted in the latest round of sanctions.

Abramovich had already signalled his intention to sell Chelsea, but that process is now restricted, having huge implications on the reigning European champions.

The decision will impact Chelsea's transfer activity as well as their ticket sales. Chelsea may pay staff and players, but must not sign any new players or complete any new contracts.
