Pep Guardiola outlines Man City plans for Josko Gvardiol full debut

Pep Guardiola hinted that he could wait until the trip to Sheffield United to hand Josko Gvardiol his full debut for Manchester City,

Gvardiol signed in a £77.5m deal from RB Leipzig and came off the bench against Burnley on the opening game of the Premier League season on Friday. With Ruben Dias out and John Stones doubtful, Gvardiol could feature against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday as fans eagerly await a chance to see more of their new signing.

However, Guardiola suggested that he will give Gvardiol a little more time on the training pitch to adapt to his new surroundings and the complicated City defensive system, with limited training sessions to work with the Croatian so far. After City return from Athens following the Super Cup clash with Sevilla, which finishes in the early hours on Thursday, they face a quick turnaround before welcoming Newcastle to the Etihad on Saturday night.

Speaking ahead of the Super Cup, Guardiola suggested that the two games this week may come too soon for a full debut for Gvardiol - although he did leave the door open for the centre-back to change his mind.

"I was really pleased for his debut at Burnley," the manager said.

"Unfortunately he didn't have much time to train together for the schedule that we have. After the Newcastle game [on Saturday night] we have eight days to train. Step by step. Of course he's here, if we decide to play he's more than ready to do it."

Defender Manuel Akanji added that he has been impressed by what he has seen from Gvardiol, having faced him in Germany when the pair played for Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig respectively.
