People horrified after learning what orange dot means on their iPhone

People have been left horrified after learning what it means when there is an orange dot at the top of your Apple iPhone screen.

It can sometimes be accompanied by a green dot at seemingly random moments, however, there is a purpose behind them but not everyone is impressed. Posted on social media, one user asked: “How to get rid of this orange thingy?” Along with a photo of the dot. And while people were quick to explain what it was and what it did, no one seemed to be able to get rid of it.

One person replied: “That means your microphone is in use on your device.” While many assumed this was common knowledge, not everyone was aware. In response, someone replied: “WTF!? Who is listening to me? Mine is always on. I never even noticed it before.”

According to Apple, the colours are there to alert you whenever your microphone or camera is activated and was first added to iPhone in the iOS 14 update released in 2020. It’s usually possible to open the Control Centre to see which app is using your microphone and/or camera.

Explaining that she wasn’t using any apps that required a microphone, and had been through her settings to find if there was an app using a microphone, several people revealed they’d also been trying to solve the mystery.

One user responded: “Tens of millions of us have been asking ourselves the same question.” Someone else suggested: “If you aren’t using your mic actively then you may wish to do a true reset of your phone; it seems a system process got stuck using it.”

Another person shared: “Close all your apps, one of them is actively using the mic. You can actually pull up your quick control center and see which app is using it at the top of your screen.”
