Paul Scholes identified trait Gareth Southgate shares with Sir Alex Ferguson amid Man United links

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has already identified a trait that could make England manager Gareth Southgate stand out for Manchester United - and it’s something he shares with Sir Alex Ferguson.

There is still uncertainty over the long-term future of Erik ten Hag following the takeover of the club by Jim Ratcliffe. The Daily Star reports that Southgate has emerged as the number one target to replace the Dutchman.

The Three Lions boss is preparing to lead England in Euro 2024, but his contract with the FA runs out in December, although the organisation are keen for him to sign a new contract.

The report adds that Southgate wouldn’t come cheap with it costing any club around £800,000 in compensation if they make an approach. It is also said that Ratcliffe would like a decision from the England boss soon to put plans for next season and beyond together.

It is said that some club legends have been consulted and Southgate was the overwhelming choice. One of those asked could have been Scholes, who made his feelings on his former England teammate clear back in 2008.

Ahead of a Premier League clash between United and Middlesbrough, then managed by Southgate, Scholes said: "There is a bit of needle in every game these days, because the teams are so desperate to win. Gareth Southgate is a winner by nature.

"He will want his team to win every game they play and to perform well. Our manager is the same — it is just the way it is."
