Paul Scholes backs Ralph Hasenhuttl for Manchester United job: ‘He’d be a good fit’

Paul Scholes has come round to the idea of Ralph Hasenhuttl taking over as Manchester United manager, saying the Southampton boss would be a ‘good fit’ at Old Trafford.

Hasenhuttl has not really been touted as a potential new Red Devils manager, with the likes of Mauricio Pochetino and Erik ten Hag more likely candidates, but Scholes can see the appeal of the Austrian.

Current interim manager Ralf Rangnick is set to take on a consultancy role at the club after this season and the German has already worked with Hasenhuttl during a spell at RB Leipzig.

Rangnick was sporting director and Hasenhuttl manager during an impressive spell at Leipzig, and with their shared love of a high pressing style, the pair could bring this philosophy to United.

Scholes has been impressed with the style of play Hasenhuttl has brought to Southampton and feels he could translate that to a higher level at Manchester United.

‘I’ve always liked him, I’ve always thought the football he plays at Southampton, with not the best squad, but the type of football he’s played has worked for them. His teams have been good to watch, he comes across really well,’ Scholes told BT Sport.

‘This would be a different kind of pressure. Fans of this club are thinking more a Pochettino or an Antonio Conte, people who have been at the bigger clubs, but the more I think about it I don’t think it would be a bad thing. The way he goes about his business looks good.’

Scholes admits that Hasenhuttl has not had the experience of working with a string of world class players, but he also feels that it might be a good time for the club to look to build around a manager rather than expect instant success.
