Paul Pogba departure means Manchester United must take rebuild seriously in transfer window

Manchester United may be in the midst of trying to appoint a new manager but once that process is completed they will need to address their squad. After a poor season which will likely see the club miss out on a top-four place and end the season without any silverware despite the high expectations that fans started the season with.

The Athletic have reported that United are in the market for a striker to replace Edinson Cavani, and a right-winger, but also for two midfielders, one defensive and one more attacking. And it is the midfield where many fans will want to see significant improvements.

Paul Pogba seems likely to leave on a free transfer in the summer but he is yet to decide on his future. The Frenchman has not made the impact that many fans expected but he is still a key member of the team when he does play, so he will need to be replaced and that is likely why a more offensive-minded midfielder is being targeted, according to the report.

But while many fans have focused on Pogba, they also need to realise that important squad depth in Juan Mata, who most recently featured against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, and Jesse Lingard are also out of contract. Their positions could be taken by youngsters.

James Garner has impressed while out on loan with Nottingham Forest and has looked like he would be a valuable asset to have in and around the squad next season. The Manchester Evening News understands that the 20-year-old English midfielder is likely to get a shot to impress at Old Trafford next season instead of being sent out on loan again.
